Description:

The Crossroads Of Spice: An Introduction To Malaysian Cuisine, is taught September 20th from 10AM to 1PM by Erin Chapla costs $80.

Chef and “Spice Queen” Erin Chapla takes you on a culinary and historical tour of Malaysia, the best place for food that she’s travelled. Malaysian cuisine is an intersection of many of the world’s finest culinary traditions: Indian, Chinese, Thai & European, as well as the influence of the New World; the confluence of all this with Malaysia’s own tropic bounty results in a magnificent cuisine steeped in dramatic history. With maps and slides, we’ll delve into the fascinating history and geographical specifics of the region, and its significance to the spice trade that helped shape the course of world economic history. We’ll enjoy the scents and tastes of fresh herbs and spices, some new and some familiar, enlivened by the context of their own stories. Erin will share recipes and techniques as she demonstrates a Malaysian spice paste preparation, and shows you how to perfume your own cooking with a few simple spice blends that transcend their ingredients. The evening will culminate in a sampling of dishes which illustrate the delicious melting pot that is Malaysia.

Art on the Meadow is a unique program, providing an intergenerational space for students to come together in the inspiring natural environment at Ox-Bow for half day, one day, or short term multi-day classes. Our workshops are geared toward teen and adult makers of all experience levels, age 13 and up. Art on the Meadow workshops offer participants an opportunity to connect traditional art and craft processes with contemporary ideas and approaches to artmaking. We strive for our workshops to be imaginatively challenging and logistically accessible for our West Michigan neighbors. Come jump into Ox-Bow’s creative community (and maybe even into our beautiful lagoon)!
