Here in the Art Coast^(®), you won’t need a dramatic, last-minute career change
to reconnect with the holiday spirit or embrace the appeal of life away from the
big city. Just stroll down our charming streets lined with quaint boutiques and
art galleries, take in the twinkling lights reflecting off the storefront windows,
and feel embraced by the friendliness of the locals. Before you know it, you’ll
be enjoying the warm, inviting aroma of fresh-baked goods and sipping hot cocoa
at [**Uncommon Coffee Roasters**](https://saugatuck.com/business/uncommon-coffee-roasters/)

What makes a Hallmark movie so appealing? According to a _New York Times_ article,
Hallmark movie formulas tap into our deep need for predictability and joy. It’s
the cozy, tight-knit community where everyone knows your name, the local café where
strangers become friends, and the sense of belonging that permeates every corner.
Well, Saugatuck/Douglas has this kind of charm on tap. Whether you’re wandering
through the **[Saugatuck Douglas Art Club Holiday Market](https://saugatuck.com/event/saugatuck-douglas-art-club-holiday-market/)**

## **The Perfect Setting for Romance (or Just Really Good Pie)**

What’s a Hallmark movie without a little romance? Luckily, Saugatuck/Douglas is
brimming with opportunities for swoon-worthy moments. Horse-drawn carriage rides?
Check. Beautiful sunsets along a frozen lakeshore? Oh yes. Share a candlelit dinner
at one of our many romantic restaurants (we’ve got you covered with this list [here](https://saugatuck.com/top-5-most-romantic-restaurants-for-the-perfect-date-night/))
or snuggle up in front of a fireplace in a cozy inn after a day of snowshoeing the
trails of **[Saugatuck Dunes State Park](https://saugatuck.com/business/saugatuck-dunes-state-park-2/)**.(
Here’s our [list](https://saugatuck.com/toast-your-toes-by-the-fire/) of lodging
where you can toast your toes by the fire.)

Not looking for love? No worries—you can have just as heartwarming an experience
with a really good slice of homemade pie from **[Crane’s Pie Pantry and Restaurant](https://saugatuck.com/business/crane-s-pie-pantry-restaurant-winery/)**.
After all, sometimes the best love story is the one between you and dessert.

## **Holiday Magic That’s Totally Instagrammable**

For those visiting during the holiday season, our towns’ annual events only add
to the magic. The season begins with tree-lighting ceremonies in [Saugatuck](https://saugatuck.com/event/saugatuck-christmas-tree-lighting/),
[Douglas](https://saugatuck.com/event/douglas-light-night/), and [Fennville](https://saugatuck.com/event/fennville-holiday-parade-and-tree-lighting/),
followed by the delightfully whimsical **[Saugatuck Whootville Christmas Parade](https://saugatuck.com/event/saugatuck-whootville-christmas-parade/)**,
where Santa and a cast of colorful characters make their way through downtown. As
the lights begin to twinkle downtown, the illuminated star on **[Mt. Baldhead](https://saugatuck.com/business/mount-baldhead/)**
shines brightly above the Kalamazoo River, presiding over the festivities from its
place high above town.

Then the stage is set—quite literally—at the historic **[Saugatuck Women’s Club](https://saugatuck.com/business/saugatuck-women-s-club/)**,
where local performers bring Charles Dickens’ [**A Christmas Carol** ](https://saugatuck.com/event/a-christmas-carol-8/)
to life each year. This beloved community production has been part of the holidays
here for four decades, proving that some classics are simply too good to reinvent.

And because every holiday movie needs a little comic relief, we even have our own**
[Ugly Christmas Sweater Pub Crawl](https://saugatuck.com/event/6th-annual-ugly-sweater-pub-crawl/)**
where you might have your own “meet cute” moment as you go from bar to bar. (Check
out all our holiday events [here](https://saugatuck.com/things-to-do/events/?_event_type=holiday).)
It’s impossible not to feel the holiday spirit when you’re surrounded by this much
warmth and cheer. And, while we won’t have the overdone orchestral music in the
background, there will be plenty of caroling.

## **Hallmark-Style Plot Twists, Minus the Drama**

You know how every Hallmark movie has that one “will they or won’t they” moment?
Don’t worry—there’s no dramatic city-versus-country life decision here, just the
laid-back charm of small, coastal towns that will make you want to stay forever.
Instead of juggling career dilemmas, you’ll be figuring out if you should stay an
extra day to enjoy that wine-tasting tour or catch an ice volcano erupting along
the shoreline (Yes, that’s actually a thing here.)

## What to Bring (and Leave Behind) for Every Art Coast® Season

**Spring**

Spring on the Art Coast likes to keep things interesting. Mornings can be brisk,
afternoons can be sunny, and a passing shower may decide to join you somewhere in
between.

Pack light layers you can add or shed throughout the day, plus a water-resistant
jacket, closed-toe walking shoes, and an umbrella that can handle a little lake
breeze. A warm hat isn’t a bad idea early in the season, while sunglasses and sunscreen
become increasingly useful as summer gets closer.

Pack with your favorite pursuits in mind, whether that means birdwatching, going
for a bike ride, playing 18 holes, or spending an afternoon at a winery.

Retro Boats

**Summer **

Summer packing starts with the obvious: a swimsuit, shorts, sunscreen, sunglasses,
sandals, a hat, and clothes that are comfortable enough for a full day of wandering.

The less obvious essential? A light sweater or jacket. Even when the afternoon is
hot, lake breezes can cool things down quickly—especially aboard a boat, along the
waterfront, or after sunset. A light, breathable layer will keep you comfortable
without taking up much room in your bag.

Your plans might include swimming, boating, kayaking, enjoying a picnic on the beach,
or catching an outdoor performance, so bring clothes that can keep up.

Dinner attire along the Art Coast, no matter where you go, is casual, so leave the
fancy clothes at home—unless dressing up is your thing. Around here, we’re firm
believers in “you do you.”

One more summer essential: patience. The Art Coast is especially popular when the
beaches are calling, which means parking spots, restaurant tables, and some attractions
may come with a longer wait. Start your day early, make reservations when possible,
and remember—you’re on vacation. A little flexibility goes a long way.

**Fall**

Do not put that swimsuit away just yet. Lake Michigan holds onto summer’s warmth
into early fall, making September surprisingly inviting for swimming, boating, kayaking,
and paddleboarding.

Fall days can feel warm in the sun, while mornings and evenings bring that familiar
autumn crispness. Pack T-shirts, sweaters, a medium-weight jacket, jeans, and comfortable
shoes for orchard paths, woodland trails, and long downtown strolls. Whether you’re
picking apples, hiking through fall color, lingering on a winery patio, or gallery
hopping, layers let you adjust as the day unfolds. Add a rain jacket and hat, and
you’ll be ready for just about anything.

**Winter**

This is Michigan. And whether there’s snow in the forecast or not, it will be cold.
Winter calls for a warm coat, hat, gloves, scarf, and insulated, water-resistant
boots with good traction. Thermal layers and warm wool socks will make outdoor adventures
much more enjoyable, whether you’re cross-country skiing, walking a snowy trail,
or admiring ice formations along the lakeshore.

Pack cozy, comfortable indoor layers that are easy to shed once you step inside
a warm café, restaurant, gallery, or boutique. Many local B&Bs and lodging properties
also have fireplaces (find them [here](https://saugatuck.com/toast-your-toes-by-the-fire/)),
so removable layers will let you enjoy the glow without getting overly toasty.

**What Else to Bring**

The smartest Art Coast packing list goes well beyond clothing. Here are some other
essentials we suggest you bring along.

**Bring binoculars.** Great Lakes freighters can appear on the horizon, while wetlands,
woods, and shoreline provide opportunities to spot everything from herons and owls
to migrating songbirds. Keep your eyes open, as the scenery occasionally moves.

**Bring a reusable water bottle.** Keep it handy while exploring so you can stay
hydrated. From shop ‘till you drop excursions to strenuous dune climbs, you’ll appreciate
having a drink within reach—and one less disposable bottle to toss.

**Bring cash.** Most businesses accept cards, but a few memorable local experiences
do not. The **[Chain Ferry](https://saugatuck.com/business/saugatuck-chain-ferry/)**
is cash only, as is the[ **Sand Bar**](https://saugatuck.com/business/sand-bar-saloon/).
The[ **Star of Saugatuck**](https://saugatuck.com/business/star-of-saugatuck-boat-cruises/)
accepts major credit cards for cruise tickets at its main ticket office, but its
onboard concession stand and bar are cash only.

**Bring your creative supplies.** A sketchbook, camera, watercolor set, or travel
easel is perfectly at home on the Art Coast. Set up at the four-acre poppy field
next to **[Pleasant Hill Farm](https://saugatuck.com/business/pleasant-hill-farm/)**
in June and July, and at[ **Oval Beach**](https://saugatuck.com/business/oval-beach/),**
[Saugatuck Dunes State Park](https://saugatuck.com/business/saugatuck-dunes-state-park-2/)**,
or along the Kalamazoo River at **[Wicks Park](https://saugatuck.com/business/wicks-park/)**
at any time throughout the year. You never know what might inspire your next masterpiece.

**Bring some empty space.** Galleries, boutiques, and antique shops are filled with
things you’ll want to take home. Your future self will appreciate the extra room
you left in your suitcase. You may also want a tote bag for orchard finds, farmers
market produce, or the bottle of local wine that was definitely too good to leave
behind.

**Bring a bucket list or scavenger hunt list.** This is especially fun for kids,
although adults tend to become just as competitive. Add Art Coast original activities
such as visiting the Free Little Art Gallery outside the **[Button Gallery](https://saugatuck.com/business/button-gallery/)**
in Douglas, climbing the 303 steps to the top of **[Mt. Baldhead](https://saugatuck.com/business/mount-baldhead/)**,
riding the hand-cranked **[Chain Ferry](https://saugatuck.com/business/saugatuck-chain-ferry/)**,
eating a hot dog from the **[Root Beer Barrel](https://saugatuck.com/business/root-beer-barrel/)**,
finding a piece of public art, and watching the sun set over Lake Michigan at **
[Oval Beach](https://saugatuck.com/business/oval-beach/)**. Looking for scavenger
hunt ideas? Find some [here](https://saugatuck.com/on-the-hunt-for-fun/).

Big Lake Outfitters

**What Not to Pack**

Leave the bulky equipment at home and rent what you need locally. Area outfitters
offer all the gear you need—sometimes with delivery directly to your lodging or
launch site.

Beach gear like chairs and umbrellas can be rented at **[Woosah](https://saugatuck.com/business/woosah-outfitters-and-outside-coffee/)**,**
[In the Elements](https://saugatuck.com/business/in-the-elements-rental-rental-bike-repair/)**,
and **[Beachside Rental Services](https://saugatuck.com/business/beachside-rental-services/).**
Some lodging partners also provide complimentary beach equipment for guests. **[In the Elements Rental](https://saugatuck.com/business/in-the-elements-rental-rental-bike-repair/)**,**
[Blue Star Barns Coffee & Bikes](https://saugatuck.com/business/blue-star-barns/)**,
and [**Big Lake Outfitters** ](https://saugatuck.com/business/big-lake-outfitters-of-saugatuck/)
all rent bikes, while** [In the Elements Rental](https://saugatuck.com/business/in-the-elements-rental-rental-bike-repair/)**,**
[Big Lake Outfitters](https://saugatuck.com/business/big-lake-outfitters-of-saugatuck/)**,
and **[Third Coast Paddling](https://saugatuck.com/business/third-coast-paddling/)**
rent kayaks and paddleboards. During the winter months, rent cross-country skis
or snowshoes from **[Landsharks](https://saugatuck.com/business/landsharks/)**.

You can also leave the rigid schedule behind. You may arrive with a planned itinerary,
but leave room for local recommendations from that interesting person you met while
waiting for coffee. You never know how a surprising detour might lead to a new favorite
beach, restaurant, artist, or hiking trail. Some of the best Art Coast moments happen
when you bring an open mind.

## **Leaf Peeping, Local Style**

**There’s no question that the trees put on a spectacular show during autumn. And
one of the best ways to experience it is to step onto a trail and let the season
unfold around you.**

“An experience I especially love in the fall is a hike through **[Saugatuck Dunes State Park](https://saugatuck.com/business/saugatuck-dunes-state-park-2/)**.
Being under the trees as they change color, with the sun shining through, is so
special!” _Hannah VanBuskirk, Manager, [BaySide Inn](https://saugatuck.com/business/bayside-inn/)_

“My favorite fall activity is hiking through the [Saugatuck Dunes State Park](https://saugatuck.com/business/saugatuck-dunes-state-park-2/).
I just love the sound of crunching leaves under my feet.”_ Ashley Siebelink, Executive
Director, Saugatuck/Douglas Area Convention & Visitors Bureau_

“Our favorite trail for hiking the dunes in the fall is the [Crow’s Nest Trail](https://saugatuck.com/business/crows-nest-trail/).”
_Jenn Davenport, Owner & Innkeeper, [Judson Heath Colonial Inn](https://saugatuck.com/business/judson-heath-colonial-inn/)_

**A 1.7-mile loop through wooded dunes, the Crow’s Nest Trail leads to a scenic
overlook with breathtaking views of the Oxbow Lagoon, Lake Michigan, and the Kalamazoo
River.**

such as the Livingston Trail Loop.**

is a favorite. Many of the trails go out to Lake Michigan, and, often, one has the
woods as well as the gorgeous shoreline all to oneself.” _James Brandess, Artist,
[James Brandess Studios & Gallery](https://saugatuck.com/business/james-brandess-studios-gallery-inc/)_

**That same appreciation for taking in the fall color shows up in different ways
depending on who you ask.**

“I highly recommend making the climb up [Mount Baldhead](https://saugatuck.com/business/mount-baldhead/).
Fall is such a beautiful, peaceful time in Saugatuck, and the view from the top
changes completely when the leaves turn. It’s special to me because the summer rush
has slowed down, leaving you with a quiet, panoramic look at the stunning autumn
foliage.” _Mark Lodenstein, Owner, [Porches on Mason](https://saugatuck.com/business/porches-on-mason/)_

“One of the best ways of experiencing fall is taking the drive to [Oval Beach](https://saugatuck.com/business/oval-beach/)
on a sunny day when the leaves have changed, and everything glows yellow.” _Gary
Kott, Owner, [Hidden Garden Cottages & Suites](https://saugatuck.com/business/hidden-garden-cottages-suites/)_

## **Join In A Local Tradition**

**Beyond the scenic trails and brilliant fall color, it’s the traditions locals
look forward to every autumn that truly bring the season to life.**

“It’s on everyone’s list already, but I have to say a trip to **[Crane Orchards](https://saugatuck.com/business/crane-s-orchard/)**
for apple picking, donuts, live music, etc. is such a nice family activity in the
fall.” _Brittany Obetts, Project Coordinator, Saugatuck/Douglas Area Convention &
Visitors Bureau_

“I always recommend a cruise on the **[Star of Saugatuck](https://saugatuck.com/business/star-of-saugatuck-boat-cruises/)**
in the fall, or doing anything out at the apple orchards, pumpkin patches, and wineries.”
_Birdie Holley**,** Operator, [**Old Pike Cottages** **& Relax Rentals**](https://saugatuck.com/business/old-pike-cottages/)_

“We’ve had guests ask, ‘What do the locals do, where do they go?’ I tell them to
check out a football or basketball game at the high school, go bowling at **[Alley’s Pizza at Lakeview Lanes](https://saugatuck.com/business/alleys-pizza-at-lakeview-lanes/)**,
have a beer at **[The Cove](https://saugatuck.com/business/the-cove/)** in Douglas
or dinner at the **[What Not Inn](https://saugatuck.com/business/what-not-inn/)**
in Fennville.”_ Tracy Lanning, Owner, **[Forest Inn](https://saugatuck.com/business/forest-inn/)**_

“I love seeing the downtown fall decorations and attending the Halloween festivities,
including the **[Family & Pet Halloween Parade](https://saugatuck.com/event/family-halloween-pet-parade-and-party/)**
in Saugatuck.” _Leah Root, Resident_

## **Save Time for Something Unexpected**

**A lot of visitors assume beach season ends with Labor Day. Locals know better.**

“Not a lot of people think you can swim in Lake Michigan in the fall, but it is
such a nice time to enjoy the relatively empty beaches. The water has had all summer
to warm up! It is such a special place in the fall. I’ve seen people swimming through
October!” _Eve McKeown, Destination Experience Ambassador, Saugatuck/Douglas Area

## **Let the Art Coast Live Up to Its Name**

**With the summer crowds gone, fall’s slower pace creates more room to enjoy the
creative side of the destination.**

“Take a stroll through the[ **SCA’s** ](https://saugatuck.com/business/saugatuck-center-for-the-arts/)
gallery to check out the current exhibition (always free of charge) and pair that
up with a visit to one of our local fine art galleries. It’s a great juxtaposition
to see an exhibition vs. individual works of art. But all of it gets your brain
firing, sparks curiosity, provides a new experience, and gives you (literally) a
mental health boost!” _Kristin Armstrong, Executive Director, **[Saugatuck Center for the Arts](https://saugatuck.com/business/saugatuck-center-for-the-arts/)**_

**Autumn also brings a full calendar of creative experiences, including the [Fall Gallery Stroll](https://saugatuck.com/event/art-coast-of-michigan-fall-gallery-stroll/),
making it an especially rewarding time to connect with the artists and organizations
that help define the Art Coast.**

“Take advantage of the events at [Ox-Bow](https://saugatuck.com/business/ox-bow-school-of-art-and-artists-residency/)!!”
_Philip Palazzolo, Owner, [Art Coast Properties](https://saugatuck.com/business/art-coast-properties/)_

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the **[Fall Gallery Stroll](https://saugatuck.com/event/art-coast-of-michigan-fall-gallery-stroll/)**,
celebrating five decades of bringing artists, gallery owners, collectors, and curious
visitors together. While the milestone is worth celebrating, the heart of the event
remains unchanged: discovering remarkable art while connecting with the people who
curate and create it.

The tradition began in 1976, inspired by a gallery stroll that Joyce Petter, original
owner of **[J. Petter Galleries](https://saugatuck.com/business/j-petter-galleries/)**,
experienced along Boston’s Newbury Street. Believing the creative energy and collaborative
vibe between galleries would resonate in Saugatuck/Douglas, she joined with several
neighboring businesses to create an event that encouraged visitors to explore the
community one gallery at a time. Fifty years later, that spirit of collaboration
still defines the Fall Gallery Stroll, with J. Petter Galleries still playing a
leading role in organizing and championing this spectacular autumn event.

Today, over twenty galleries and artist studios participate, showcasing everything
from paintings and sculpture to ceramics, jewelry, photography, glass, and mixed
media created by local, regional, and nationally recognized artists. Many locations
extend their hours while offering artist demonstrations, live music, refreshments,
and opportunities to meet the artists behind the work.

Part of the fun is simply exploring. Stroll through the charming downtown galleries
and studios of Saugatuck and Douglas, then venture beyond the main streets to discover
artist studios tucked throughout the Art Coast. Along the way, you’ll enjoy beautiful
fall weather, colorful scenery, and a welcoming and creative atmosphere that has
drawn artists here for generations.

Although other gallery strolls take place throughout the year, the Fall Gallery
Stroll remains the area’s signature arts weekend and one of the quintessential Art
Coast experiences. Whether you’re a longtime collector, an aspiring artist, or simply
someone who appreciates creativity, it’s an inspiring way to spend an autumn weekend.

The 2026 Fall Gallery Stroll takes place **October 10–11**. For more information,

Laketown Beach

**Don’t Skip the Beach**

It might not be the first thing that comes to mind in fall, but it should be. Early
in the season, Lake Michigan can still be warm enough for a quick swim, so don’t
forget your bathing suit. (Water temperatures can remain in the high 60s through
the end of September.) Even if you’re not getting in the water, the [beaches](https://saugatuck.com/beaches-and-dunes/)—
we have six of them—feel entirely different this time of year: quieter, more open,
and beautifully serene. Bring a picnic, bring a blanket, and plan to stay a while.

**Pro Tip:** After Labor Day, parking at **[Oval Beach](https://saugatuck.com/business/oval-beach/)**
is free. Bring an insulated travel mug and stop by [**Woosah Art + Coffee**, **Respite Cappuccino Court**](https://saugatuck.com/business/woosah-outfitters-and-outside-coffee/),
or **[Uncommon Coffee Roasters](https://saugatuck.com/business/uncommon-coffee-roasters/)**
before heading to the shore because coffee on the beach somehow feels better in
the fall.

**Take in Fall Color from a New Perspective**

Leaf peeping in the fall is a given, but here, you can experience it in ways that
feel a little more memorable.

Climb the 303 steps to the top of **[Mt. Baldhead](https://saugatuck.com/business/mount-baldhead/)**
for sweeping views of the Kalamazoo River and autumn color from above. Or, take
to the water for another unique vantage point. Enjoy a ride on the **[Star of Saugatuck](https://saugatuck.com/business/star-of-saugatuck-boat-cruises/)**
paddlewheel boat and cruise along the Saugatuck Harbor into Lake Michigan to see
fall colors reflecting off the water. Cruises are available through the end of October.
However you decide to take it all in, don’t rush it. This is the season for slowing
down.

**Pro Tip:** Fall color around here typically peaks in mid-to-late October, but
keep in mind that Mother Nature doesn’t follow a calendar. For best timing, check
Pure Michigan’s [fall color tracker](https://www.michigan.org/fallcolormap) as you
plan your trip.

**Get Out & Explore**

Cooler temperatures, fewer crowds, and a front-row seat to the season unfolding
all around you make fall one of the best times to explore the Art Coast under your
own power. Crisp air and colorful canopies offer their own reward as you hike through
forests and dunes or pedal past the lakeshore and countryside.

At **[Saugatuck Dunes State Park](https://saugatuck.com/business/saugatuck-dunes-state-park-2/)**,
13 miles of trails wind through coastal dunes and forest before opening onto 2.5
miles of secluded Lake Michigan shoreline. The park also includes the 300-acre Patty
Birkholz Natural Area, giving you more room to explore the coastal dune system.
Near **[Oval Beach](https://saugatuck.com/business/oval-beach/)**, wander the rolling
dunes of the 173-acre **[Saugatuck Harbor Natural Area](https://saugatuck.com/business/saugatuck-harbor-natural-area/)**,
where peaceful forest and wetlands are surrounded by the Kalamazoo River and Lake
Michigan. Or head to **[Saugatuck Wilds Nature Preserve](https://saugatuck.com/business/saugatuck-wilds-nature-preserve/)**,
where nearly 170 acres of mature forest and ravines overlook Silver Creek.

Prefer to take in the scenery on two wheels? Fall is prime biking weather, and there
are routes for everything from an easy afternoon ride to a serious day in the saddle.
Follow the paved Beeline Trail toward Holland, or explore the Blue Star Trail, where
boardwalks and designated bike lanes carry you through Douglas and beyond. If you’re
ready to make a day of it, there are plenty of routes found [here](https://saugatuck.com/bike-along-the-art-coast/).
We recommend exploring a trail that takes you into the Fennville countryside, where
wineries, orchards, and farmland make the ride especially scenic this time of year.

**Pro Tip: **There’s no need to bring your own bike. Rent them from[ **Big Lake Outfitters**](https://saugatuck.com/business/big-lake-outfitters-of-saugatuck/),**
[Blue Star Barns Coffee & Bikes](https://saugatuck.com/business/blue-star-barns/)**,
or** [In the Elements Rental](https://saugatuck.com/business/in-the-elements-rental-rental-bike-repair/)**.
Some places will even deliver them to your door. Bonus points if you’re in town
mid-September: Don’t miss the **[Lakeshore Harvest Ride](https://saugatuck.com/event/annual-lakeshore-harvest-ride/)**,
a fundraising bike tour showcasing some of the best spots in Southwest Michigan.
Choose from 20-to 60-mile routes with stops, including wineries, microbreweries,
family farms, orchards, art studios, and more.

**Go All In on Wine Season**

Fall is harvest season, which makes it one of the best times to experience our local
wineries. Just south of town, the Fennville AVA, a designated wine-growing region—
and one of only five areas in Michigan with this distinction—comes alive with harvest
activity. Sample crisp whites, bold reds, or something sparkling with tastings at**
[Modales](https://saugatuck.com/business/modales/)**, **[Michigan Wine Co.](https://saugatuck.com/business/michigan-wine-company/)**,**
[Fenn Valley Vineyards & Winery](https://saugatuck.com/business/fenn-valley-vineyards-winery/)**,
and **[Crane’s Winery](https://saugatuck.com/business/crane-s-pie-pantry-restaurant-winery/)**.
Plan a leisurely afternoon hopping between wineries and taste for yourself how the
region’s terroir affects the flavors of the wines produced here.

**Pro Tip:** Charter a private wine-tasting tour through **[Coastal Tours](https://saugatuck.com/business/coastal-tours/)**,**
[Untapped Sights & Tours](https://saugatuck.com/business/untapped-sights-tours/)**,
or **[The Bottle Run](https://saugatuck.com/business/the-bottle-run/)** for worry-
free transportation between wineries. Some tours include the tasting fees and even
lunch, so you can spend less time coordinating and more time enjoying the experience.

**Make Time for the Orchards**

If there’s one place that checks nearly every box on your quintessential fall wish
list, it’s **[Crane Orchards](https://saugatuck.com/business/crane-s-orchard/)**
in Fennville. This sixth-generation family farm has been part of the landscape for
more than a century and grows more than 20 varieties of apples, with different favorites
ready for picking throughout the season. Grab a bag and head into the orchard for
everything from Honeycrisp and Jonagold to Fuji, Empire, and more.

But apple picking is only the beginning. Get lost in the 20-acre corn maze, which
debuts an entirely new design every year, or hop aboard a weekend hayride for a
tractor-drawn tour through the farm, orchards, and woods. Later in the season, you
can add pumpkin picking to the list, too.

**Pro Tip: **Don’t confuse **[Crane Orchards](https://saugatuck.com/business/crane-s-orchard/)**
with neighboring **[Crane’s Pie Pantry & Restaurant](https://saugatuck.com/business/crane-s-pie-pantry-restaurant-winery/)**.
They’re separate, family-owned businesses, which means you can pick your apples
and tackle the corn maze at the orchard, then head over to the Pie Pantry for cider
and donuts or lunch and a slice of homemade pie.

**Experience Creativity at Its Best**

There’s no better time to discover why we’re called the Art Coast than during the**
[Annual Fall Gallery Stroll](https://saugatuck.com/event/art-coast-of-michigan-fall-gallery-stroll/)**,
happening this year on October 10-11. Celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2026,
the biggest gallery event of the year brings the Saugatuck/Douglas art scene to
life. Spend the weekend gallery hopping, watch live demos, meet the artists behind
the work, enjoy live music, and sample delicious local bites and refreshments.

And with dozens of galleries and artist studios throughout the area, there’s a lot
to explore. You’ll find everything from painting, sculpture, and photography to
glass, ceramics, jewelry, and mixed media, with work by both nationally recognized
artists and emerging talent. The best part? You don’t need to know a thing about
art to enjoy it. Wander in, look around, strike up a conversation, and see what
catches your eye.

**Pro Tip: **Can’t make it for Gallery Stroll weekend? Fall is still an ideal time
to immerse yourself in art. With fewer crowds, you can take your time moving between
galleries and artist studios in downtown Saugatuck and Douglas or discover the public
art woven throughout our streets, parks, and waterfront in this [self-guided walking tour](https://saugatuck.com/self-guided-public-art-tour-of-the-art-coast/).

**Taste the Harvest**

If there’s ever a season to come hungry to the Art Coast, it’s fall. Surrounded
by farms, orchards, and vineyards, Saugatuck/Douglas/Fennville sits in the heart
of Michigan’s Fruit Belt and within the second most agriculturally diverse state
in the country. When harvest season arrives, much of what’s growing nearby makes
its way onto local menus, bringing the flavors of the season straight from the farm
to your plate.

Don’t assume cooler weather means the end of al fresco dining. Many local restaurants,
including **[Pennyroyal Café & Provisions](https://saugatuck.com/business/pennyroyal-cafe-provisions/)**,**
[Coast 236](https://saugatuck.com/business/coast-236/)**,** [Bowdie’s Chop House](https://saugatuck.com/business/bowdies-chophouse/)**,**
[Marker 14](https://saugatuck.com/business/marker-14/)**,** [Everyday People Café](https://saugatuck.com/business/everyday-people-cafe/)**,**
[The Wild Dog](https://saugatuck.com/business/wild-dog-grille/)**, and**[ Noble Twist Taphouse](https://saugatuck.com/business/noble-twist-taphouse/)**,****
offer outdoor patios and porches that let you dine well into fall.

**Pro Tip: **Want to experience even more of the Art Coast culinary scene? Join
us for the **[Art Coast® Food & Wine Festival](https://saugatuck.com/art-coast-food-wine-festival/),**
debuting this year on November 5-7. This three-day event features celebrity and
local chefs, themed dinners, curated tastings, and live entertainment, all celebrating
the flavor, craft, and creativity of the region. Learn more or get tickets [here](https://saugatuck.com/art-coast-food-wine-festival/).

Lake Michigan

**A Little More To Know Before You Go**

While fall is certainly quieter than the summer months, early fall and event weekends
are still quite popular. Be sure to book lodging and dinner reservations in advance.

Fall weather can keep you guessing, with warm, sunny afternoons giving way to chilly
evenings, especially near the lake. Dress in layers so you’re ready for both. And
as the season progresses, some attractions and businesses may shift to reduced hours,
so always check ahead before heading out.

Bella Vista Farm

**Down on the Farm**

From summer’s first berries through the fall harvest, nothing captures West Michigan’s
growing season quite like farm-fresh produce picked right where it grows, and many
of our local farms offer U-pick options.

At **[Lakeshore Berry Farms](https://saugatuck.com/business/conner-farms-blueberry-u-pick/)**,
the experience is refreshingly simple: rows of ripe berries, plenty of fresh air,
and all the blueberries and strawberries you care to pick. During the off-season,
the farm sells berries in its store, along with homemade baked goods, jams, and
ice cream. [**Glenn Star Farm** ](https://saugatuck.com/business/glenn-star-farm/)
also has blueberries ripe for the picking, while **[Pleasant Hill Farm](https://saugatuck.com/business/pleasant-hill-farm/)**
offers organically grown blueberries, homemade maple syrup, and acres of wildflowers.
Depending on the season, **[Bella Vista Farm](https://saugatuck.com/business/bella-vista-farm-2/)**
is a scenic setting for U-pick blueberries, raspberries, peaches, apples, pumpkins,
and flowers.

If you’re in the market for more than fruit, head to **[Dee’s Lakeshore Farm](https://saugatuck.com/business/dee-s-lakeshore-farm/)**,
where the harvest may include vegetables, fresh-cut flowers, and free-range eggs(
along with blueberries, raspberries, cherries, peaches, and apples). The farm also
keeps bees that produce delicious honey for purchase.

At **[Evergreen Lane Farm & Creamery](https://saugatuck.com/business/evergreen-lane-farm-creamery/)**,
the connection between farm and food becomes wonderfully clear. The creamery handcrafts
goat’s-milk cheese using milk from its own herd, along with cow’s-milk cheeses made
with locally sourced Jersey milk. Stop by the on-farm tasting room to sample and
purchase cheese—and say hello to the goats while you’re there!

For an agritourism experience that appeals to more than your taste buds, follow
the scent to **[Summerhouse Lavender Farm](https://saugatuck.com/business/summerhouse-lavender-farm/)**.
Visitors can wander among lavender, perennial gardens, and fountains or join a farm
tour to learn about growing, pruning, harvesting, and distilling lavender into essential
oil. The farm store extends the experience with oils, soaps, candles, and other
lavender-based goods.

Hidden River Farms

**Into the Orchard **

As summer transitions into fall, the Art Coast’s orchards take center stage. A local
favorite since the 1880s, **[Crane Orchards](https://saugatuck.com/business/crane-s-orchard/)**
is now operated by the sixth generation of the Crane family. Orchard visitors can
pick apples, peaches, and sweet cherries when in season, then return in fall for
pumpkins, hayrides, and a new corn maze design each year.

Nearby, **[Crane’s Pie Pantry Restaurant & Winery](https://saugatuck.com/business/crane-s-pie-pantry-restaurant-winery/)**
turns the farm’s bounty into an experience of its own. Set on a century-old fruit
farm, it’s the perfect place to unwind after picking and treat yourself to lunch,
wine, cider, or a slice of homemade pie.

If organic apples are on your list, check out **[Hidden River Farms](https://saugatuck.com/business/hidden-river-farms-llc/)**,
the lakeshore’s only certified organic apple orchard tucked into the Fennville countryside.

Michigan Wine Co

**Among the Vines**

Agritourism isn’t limited to what you can carry home in a basket. In the Fennville
American Viticultural Area, Michigan’s first federally recognized wine-growing region,
the character of the landscape comes to life in a glass of wine.

Family-owned [**Fenn Valley Vineyards** **& Winery**](https://saugatuck.com/business/fenn-valley-vineyards-winery/)
has produced wine and cider from fruit grown near Lake Michigan since 1973. With
tastings, tours, live music, and other seasonal events, the winery makes the art
of winemaking feel approachable. Fenn Valley also has a tasting room in downtown
Saugatuck for those who prefer to sip closer to the shops and waterfront.

**[Modales](https://saugatuck.com/business/modales/)**, a 76-acre farm and one of
Michigan’s few certified organic wineries, provides the ideal setting for cool-climate
wines and cider shaped by regenerative farming and minimal-intervention winemaking.
Here, you can settle onto the patio, look out over the vineyard, and sip a glass
of wine or estate-made cider.

SCA Farmers Market

![](https://saugatuck.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/farmersmarket_sca.jpg)

SCA Farmers Market

**Around the Market**

Can’t make it out to the farm? On Fridays during the growing season, the Saugatuck
Farmers Market at **[Saugatuck Center for the Arts](https://saugatuck.com/business/saugatuck-center-for-the-arts/)**
brings together regional growers and makers offering produce, eggs, cheese, meat,
baked goods, honey, maple syrup, preserves, and more.

On Tuesdays, the Douglas Farmers Market fills **[Beery Field](https://saugatuck.com/business/beery-field/)**
with locally grown produce, flowers, plants, and artisan foods. Both markets make
it easy to meet the people behind the products, gather supplies for a picnic, or
bring a little taste of the Art Coast home.

Hours, harvests, tours, and U-Pick availability change with the season—and sometimes
with the weather—so check directly with each destination before setting out. Then
take the scenic route. Along the Art Coast, the journey from farm to table is part
of the fun.

_Kerry Cunnion, Operating Partner, **[Rosemont Inn](https://saugatuck.com/business/rosemont-inn-resort-2/)**_

it, but the whole thing is just so dang good.” _Hannah VanBuskirk, Manager, **[BaySide Inn](https://saugatuck.com/business/bayside-inn/)**_

**These next votes arrive with zero hesitation:**

“The Honey Butter Chicken Biscuit Sandwich from **[The Southerner](https://saugatuck.com/business/the-southerner/)**.
Hands down. Every time. It’s worth the wait.” _Brittany Obetts, Project Coordinator,
Saugatuck/Douglas Area Convention and Visitors Bureau_

“The Short Rib Hummus at **[Duck Alley](https://saugatuck.com/business/duck-alley/)**.
Fresh, house-made creamy hummus, perfectly braised, melting short rib, whatever
fruit or vegetable Chef Jazer decided to pickle, and fresh hot bread.” _Jenn Davenport,

“Sit at the bar at **[Clearbrook Golf Club’s The Grill Room](https://saugatuck.com/business/the-grill-room-at-clearbrook/)**
and order an Old Fashioned—or your favorite cocktail. The Grill Room at Clearbrook
is the quintessential throwback: the warm, wood-paneled restaurant from our childhoods,
or from the movies. The cocktails are great, the wine list is killer, and there’s
always someone to talk with—or a game on TV. Folks don’t realize it’s open to the

“My favorite drink in Saugatuck is definitely a coffee from **[Uncommon Coffee Roasters](https://saugatuck.com/business/uncommon-coffee-roasters/)**.
It’s hands down the best coffee around, but what makes it truly special is the sense
of community they’ve built over the years. They make you feel like more than just

“You absolutely cannot miss the Michigan fruit pies from**[ Crane’s Pie Pantry Restaurant & Winery](https://saugatuck.com/business/crane-s-pie-pantry-restaurant-winery/)**
in Fennville. Whether it’s their classic apple pie or a slice of cherry, they taste
like pure tradition. The flaky, shortening-based crust and farm-fresh local fruit
make it something I find myself coming back for over and over again. Pro tip: Get
