About this Sculpture

  • Artist: Rado Kirov
  • Medium: Hand formed stainless steel
  • Size: 15" x 15" x 43"

Born in Bulgaria, Rado Kirov was interested in metal art at an early age. An apprenticeship in copper smithing for 10 years gave him the education and experience to be a professional metal artist.

When Rado moved to South Africa, it brought a shift Rado’s creative focus. He began to work in product design and functional art with interior designers and architects.

After 20 years of commercial art, he searched for a new creative outlet and developed a unique technique called the Mercury Effect. Rado alters sheets of stainless steel by heating the metal and manipulating by hand. The rippled surface created is polished to a mirror so the reflections of the viewer’s surroundings become twisted and distorted. Rado’s surfaces draw the observer into the magic of its reflection.

Walk around the sculpture

  • Notice how the form has three sides instead of four.
  • What do you notice about each side, different and the same?
  • The shape is the same but each side reflects different objects that surround the work.

Stand in front of one side.

  • Follow the reflections from top to the bottom. You will see a change because the surface is larger at the lower part and reflects more surroundings.
  • The Pyramid is a stable form, the earth’s foundation at the bottom.
  • The pointed top represents the path to the sky or universe.

Follow the light around the sculpture
