An Autumn Art Tradition 50 Years in the Making
There's no better time to experience the creative spirit of the Art Coast® than during the annual Fall Gallery Stroll. For one autumn weekend each year, galleries and artists' studios throughout Saugatuck, Douglas, and Fennville open their doors for a celebration of art, inspiration, and community that has become one of the area's most beloved—and most anticipated—traditions.
This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Fall Gallery Stroll, celebrating five decades of bringing artists, gallery owners, collectors, and curious visitors together. While the milestone is worth celebrating, the heart of the event remains unchanged: discovering remarkable art while connecting with the people who curate and create it.
The tradition began in 1976, inspired by a gallery stroll that Joyce Petter, original owner of J. Petter Galleries, experienced along Boston’s Newbury Street. Believing the creative energy and collaborative vibe between galleries would resonate in Saugatuck/Douglas, she joined with several neighboring businesses to create an event that encouraged visitors to explore the community one gallery at a time. Fifty years later, that spirit of collaboration still defines the Fall Gallery Stroll, with J. Petter Galleries still playing a leading role in organizing and championing this spectacular autumn event.
Today, over twenty galleries and artist studios participate, showcasing everything from paintings and sculpture to ceramics, jewelry, photography, glass, and mixed media created by local, regional, and nationally recognized artists. Many locations extend their hours while offering artist demonstrations, live music, refreshments, and opportunities to meet the artists behind the work.
Part of the fun is simply exploring. Stroll through the charming downtown galleries and studios of Saugatuck and Douglas, then venture beyond the main streets to discover artist studios tucked throughout the Art Coast. Along the way, you’ll enjoy beautiful fall weather, colorful scenery, and a welcoming and creative atmosphere that has drawn artists here for generations.
Although other gallery strolls take place throughout the year, the Fall Gallery Stroll remains the area’s signature arts weekend and one of the quintessential Art Coast experiences. Whether you’re a longtime collector, an aspiring artist, or simply someone who appreciates creativity, it’s an inspiring way to spend an autumn weekend.
The 2026 Fall Gallery Stroll takes place October 10–11. For more information, please visit our event calendar.
