Lights Out at Oval Beach is a special community event taking place on October 21, 2025, from 8:00 to 10:00 PM at the scenic Oval Beach, perfectly timed with the new moon for optimal stargazing. Sponsored by the Douglas UCC Creation Justice Team, with co-sponsorship from the Radar Hill Hiking Club and the Shoreline Amateur Astronomical Association (SAAA), the evening is dedicated to celebrating and protecting the night skies. Attendees will learn about light pollution, its impacts, and simple actions taken to preserve the natural darkness. The event includes a night hike along the beach from approximately 8:15 to 9:00 PM, offering a peaceful way to experience the shoreline under starlight. High-powered telescopes, provided by the SAAA, will be set up near the concession stand, where local astronomy experts will be available to guide stargazing and answer questions. Guests are encouraged to bring a blanket and relax on the sand while observing the stars. In addition, participants can engage in citizen science activities such as measuring light pollution and witnessing skyglow firsthand, as well as pick up tips for night sky photography. In case of rain, the event will be held on October 22.
