Big Temptation

About this Sculpture

  • Artist: Romero Britto
  • Medium: Enamel on Aluminum
  • Size: 55" x 12" x 58"

Brazilian artist Romero Britto started painting at an early age on newspapers, cardboard or any scrap he could find. A trip to Paris introduced Britto to the works of Matisse and PIcasso who inspired his playful themes, cubist style and graphic images.

“As an artist, I feel lucky to have been given the gift of creativity so that I may share my vision of a better world,” he stated. “I will never forget what it was like to be poor and that is why it is so important to me that my work be accessible to all people.”

His bright and bold creations took him to Miami where Pop Art was flourishing. Romero’s paintings, prints and sculptures embodies the vitality of Latin and South American cultures.

Walk around the sculpture

  • Find the three important shapes, the snake, the apple and the crown.
  • How do these objects tell the story of the Temptation?
  • Wearing a crown on its head, the serpent emits a sly look from its eyes and carries an apple on his back.

Move closer to The Temptation

  • The serpent is divided by dark black lines. How many sections? The playful patterns on the snake’s skin engage and bring whimsy for the viewer.

Stand on the side of the sculpture

  • Notice how the sides are painted black. If Britto had painted patterns on the black surfaces, imagine how busy the sculpture would be!
