Talk: From Fields, Baskets, to Boats: The Saugatuck-Douglas Fruit Industry with Anna Minnebo,

project historian on the SDHC’s Historic Markers Project. This event will be held outdoors at the

History Center’s Old School House, 130 Center Street, Douglas, on Tuesday, August 9 th at 11am.

The one-hour program begins when the school bell rings at 11 a.m. To assure comfortable

outdoor seating, attendees are encouraged to bring their own camp chairs if possible.

Last year, Minnebo worked as project historian at the SDHC, supporting a volunteer team to

erect six permanent historical markers throughout Saugatuck and Douglas. This was the first

phase of an ongoing multi-year project to share local history with the community—the History

Lives Here: Historic Marker Project.

During this presentation, Minnebo will share some of her research for the History Lives Here:

Historic Marker Project including the Douglas Basket Factory displayed at Wade’s Bayou park

and a history of the fruit industry located at Coghlin Park in Saugatuck.

Minnebo has a Master’s in History Museum Studies from the SUNY-Cooperstown Graduate

Program and was a 2020 SDHC intern prior to graduation. She also works for the City of

Holland as a staff member in historic preservation.

The SDHC is supported in part by the Michigan Arts and Culture Council (MACC) and the

National Endowment for the Arts. Additional support is provided by Michigan Humanities and

the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Allegan County Community Foundation.
