Puppy Dog Tales

About this Sculpture

  • Artist: Bobbie Carlyle
  • Medium: Bronze / Limestone
  • Size: 60" x 18" x 44"

Bobbie Carlyle is a professional bronze sculptor whose subjects span a wide range, from wildlife and Western scenes to figurative and religious works. Her sculptures are designed to evoke emotion, prompting viewers to reflect inwardly and discover the feelings they stir. Whether the emotions are calm, conflicting, angry, or endearing, her figures go well beyond first impressions.

Carlyle earned her fine arts degree while raising seven children. She often draws inspiration from her own life, especially her experiences as a mother and grandmother. Her creative process is rooted in quiet determination, turning deeply personal ideas into an incredible array of physical forms.

“My work reflects my love for classic sculpture,” she says, “but with a modern approach and a connection to the struggles and triumphs of life.”

Walk around the sculpture.

Puppy Dog Tales is designed like a storybook: it has a front, a back, and a unique side view. Step to the side and you’ll notice a charming profile of the child and the dog.

Why do you think the figures are placed at the far end of the bench?

What is the visual message Carlyle is sending to us?

Is she playing with the idea of “Tails and Tales”?

Stand in front of the piece.

Where is the focal point that your eye is drawn to?

The girl and her puppy are both focused intently on the book in front of them.

Notice the diagonal lines of the book. Now look for areas of angular motion throughout the piece.

Touch the sculpture.

What do you notice about the surface?

Where are the smooth areas? Where are the rough areas?

Does the difference in textures help to tell the story?
