How It All Began
It all started back in 1954 when a young entrepreneur, Ron Jousma, returned home from the Army with a big idea. Inspired by dune rides he had seen at Silver Lake near Hart, Michigan, he decided to bring a similar adventure to Saugatuck’s sandy hills. With a 1942 Ford convertible (and a lot of creativity), he modified his car into a dune buggy, adding extra seats in the rumble seat for his first passengers. Purchasing the present property where the ride still operates, Ron carved the first trails through the dunes west of Goshorn Lake.
As word spread, demand grew, and so did the fleet. Ron added more vehicles, including modified Ford truck chassis and even Dodge Power Wagons equipped with oversized aircraft tires to navigate over the sandy terrain. By the 1960s, the rides had become a full-on adventure, drawing visitors eager for the twists, turns, and spectacular views.
More Than Just a Ride
Today, the ride offers far more than just an adrenaline-pumping journey across the sand over hills towering up to 200 feet and sweeping views of Lake Michigan. Each 40-minute tour combines nature, humor, and history, making it enjoyable for all ages. The guides keep things lively with plenty of light-hearted comedy and storytelling along the way, including the fascinating tale of Singapore, a once-thriving lumber town in the late 19th century that is now buried beneath the sands.
A Tradition That Lives On
After years of expanding the business and even operating a second dune ride in Colorado, Jousma sold Saugatuck Dune Rides in 1978 to an Indiana family. In 1981, Linus and Janice Starring became the proud new owners, and the rides have stayed in their family ever since. The Starrings have kept the tradition and spirit of adventure alive, but it’s no small task. The ever-shifting dunes need daily care, and the vehicles require constant maintenance, including oil changes every 100 miles! During the off-season, the equipment is updated and maintained for the following year. Even with all the hard work that happens behind the scenes, the Starring family has kept the focus on creating unforgettable memories for every guest who climbs aboard.
