About this Sculpture

  • Artist: Johnny Blue
  • Medium: Steel
  • Size: 30"x 24" x 98"

The world of Johnny Blue, an artist from Fennville, Michigan, is inventive, clever, whimsical, and powerful.

Working in various metals, including stainless steel, Blue has earned recognition for his imaginative sculptures, now featured in private and corporate collections around the world.

Sometimes delicate and small, other times massive and dynamic, Blue’s creations appear in both indoor and outdoor spaces. Many of his works are made from scrap metal and found objects. These pieces present a unique challenge as the forms themselves often dictate the design. Yet every sculpture begins with a clear vision and intent.

His refined stainless steel works involve a complicated welding process where small pieces are individually welded together and then sanded and polished to create a modeled form.

Blue is especially known for his star sculptures—dynamic compositions that seem to cascade downward or ascend upward, depending on how your eye travels across them.

Walk around the sculpture.

What main shape seems to connect the different parts of this piece?

Notice the zigzag form standing vertically, almost like a totem pole.

Look closely at the sculpture.

See how the metal circles jut out from the center of the V-shaped form?

Each circle has a unique face that gives it character and visual interest.

The base is also comprised of a number of stacked circles, giving the piece weight and balance.

Step back from the sculpture.

There’s a hidden layer of history here surrounding this sculpture.

The Saugatuck Center for the Arts (SCA) building was once the Lloyd J. Harriss pie factory.

During renovations, old metal components were saved, and Johnny Blue used some of that salvaged material in this piece.

Can you spot any elements that might remind you of a pie factory?
