About this Sculpture

  • Artist: Kevin Barrett
  • Medium: Stainless Steel
  • Size: 45" x 10" x 116"

Kevin Barrett came from a family of artists. His father was a sculptor (who taught him how to weld at 14) and his grandfather was an abstract painter. Kevin was surrounded by abstract sculpture and painting from the start.

Kevin received his first commission at the age of 18. After college, he set up his first studio in Miami where he worked restoring sculptures but also creating his own work.

He moved to NYC and has a studio in Brooklyn for most of his career.

“Spending years in New York City, my work carries an urban attitude. Graffiti was everywhere, energizing the city with its animated movement and youthful voice. This energy still influences the work I make today.”

400 Culver St., Saugatuck, MI 49453

Walk around the Sculpture

  • Find the largest pieces of metal. Where are they located? How do they create a stable center?
  • Each shape touches the base to form a triangle which is a solid form. The base is a similar shape at the bottom of the sculpture.

Stand at the best view of Kickstart

  • Everyone may have a different view. What do you notice about the other pieces of metal that intermingle with the largest pieces? They are playful and move in random directions.
  • Do any of the shapes remind you of graffiti?

Move closer to the piece

  • Feel the texture. Rough or smooth? Dull or Shiny?
  • Barrett lived in New York City when he created most of his work. What reminds you of a big city when you look at the color and surface?
