About this Sculpture

  • Artist: Don Drumm
  • Medium: Steel
  • Size: 40" x 0.25" x 92"

Don Drumm has been creating works in sculpture for many years. He learned how to weld in his father’s auto garage. “One of the first things I ever made were a couple of birds out of rusty cans.”

Don decided to pursue a career in art. He earned two degrees in art and worked as an industrial designer. He left his job and with his wife Lydia, they created a gallery/studio space.

Drumm has worked uninterrupted to create works from small pieces to large sculptures. He pioneered the technique of cast aluminum and uses it frequently.

“Early on … I went to breakfast with a business friend. He said, … I don’t really see you making a living doing art. Somehow, I didn’t listen. … Here I am. I own buildings, making a living. I’m 87 and still creating, making art every day”

Walk around the sculpture

  • The Family Group is very flat.
  • What do you notice about each of the people?
  • Their silhouettes show their personalities.
  • Without faces all we know about them is through their gestures.

Step closer to sculpture

  • What do you notice about the flat metal?
  • It looks like it is painted which softens the look of the metal and gives it color.
  • The bluish patina makes the sculpture more playful.

Step back and look at the sculpture

  • The shapes are simple, very childlike.
  • Circles repeat in many places.
  • Find the empty shapes that are circular.
  • Most of these shapes (negative) help create the arms which tie the family together.
