Experience Fall On The Art Coast® Like A Local

The best fall weekends on the Art Coast are about more than just checking attractions off a list. Instead, they're built around the peaceful moments and traditions people look forward to every year. A favorite trail when the leaves begin to turn. A scenic drive that somehow never gets old. A football game under the Friday night lights. We asked local residents, business owners, and community leaders what makes fall such a special time in Saugatuck/Douglas and how they like to enjoy it. Their answers reveal the best ways to experience the season through the eyes of those who know the area best.

There’s no question that the trees put on a spectacular show during autumn. And one of the best ways to experience it is to step onto a trail and let the season unfold around you.

“An experience I especially love in the fall is a hike through Saugatuck Dunes State Park. Being under the trees as they change color, with the sun shining through, is so special!” Hannah VanBuskirk, Manager, BaySide Inn

“My favorite fall activity is hiking through the Saugatuck Dunes State Park. I just love the sound of crunching leaves under my feet.” Ashley Siebelink, Executive Director, Saugatuck/Douglas Area Convention & Visitors Bureau

“Our favorite trail for hiking the dunes in the fall is the Crow’s Nest Trail.” Jenn Davenport, Owner & Innkeeper, Judson Heath Colonial Inn

A 1.7-mile loop through wooded dunes, the Crow’s Nest Trail leads to a scenic overlook with breathtaking views of the Oxbow Lagoon, Lake Michigan, and the Kalamazoo River.

Others prefer quieter corners of the Art Coast’s trail system, like those in Shore Acres Township Park, such as the Livingston Trail Loop.

“Hiking the trails at the Felt Estate is a favorite. Many of the trails go out to Lake Michigan, and, often, one has the woods as well as the gorgeous shoreline all to oneself.” James Brandess, Artist, James Brandess Studios & Gallery

That same appreciation for taking in the fall color shows up in different ways depending on who you ask.

“I highly recommend making the climb up Mount Baldhead. Fall is such a beautiful, peaceful time in Saugatuck, and the view from the top changes completely when the leaves turn. It’s special to me because the summer rush has slowed down, leaving you with a quiet, panoramic look at the stunning autumn foliage.” Mark Lodenstein, Owner, Porches on Mason

“One of the best ways of experiencing fall is taking the drive to Oval Beach on a sunny day when the leaves have changed, and everything glows yellow.” Gary Kott, Owner, Hidden Garden Cottages & Suites

“Going upriver in fall to see the colors is spectacular.” Nicole Lewis, Resident

Join In A Local Tradition

Beyond the scenic trails and brilliant fall color, it’s the traditions locals look forward to every autumn that truly bring the season to life.

“It’s on everyone’s list already, but I have to say a trip to Crane Orchards for apple picking, donuts, live music, etc. is such a nice family activity in the fall.” Brittany Obetts, Project Coordinator, Saugatuck/Douglas Area Convention & Visitors Bureau

“I always recommend a cruise on the Star of Saugatuck in the fall, or doing anything out at the apple orchards, pumpkin patches, and wineries.” Birdie Holley, Operator, Old Pike Cottages & Relax Rentals

“We’ve had guests ask, ‘What do the locals do, where do they go?’ I tell them to check out a football or basketball game at the high school, go bowling at Alley’s Pizza at Lakeview Lanes, have a beer at The Cove in Douglas or dinner at the What Not Inn in Fennville.” Tracy Lanning, Owner, Forest Inn

“I love seeing the downtown fall decorations and attending the Halloween festivities, including the Family & Pet Halloween Parade in Saugatuck.” Leah Root, Resident

Save Time for Something Unexpected

A lot of visitors assume beach season ends with Labor Day. Locals know better.

“Not a lot of people think you can swim in Lake Michigan in the fall, but it is such a nice time to enjoy the relatively empty beaches. The water has had all summer to warm up! It is such a special place in the fall. I’ve seen people swimming through October!” Eve McKeown, Destination Experience Ambassador, Saugatuck/Douglas Area Convention & Visitors Bureau

Let the Art Coast Live Up to Its Name

With the summer crowds gone, fall’s slower pace creates more room to enjoy the creative side of the destination.

“Take a stroll through the SCA’s gallery to check out the current exhibition (always free of charge) and pair that up with a visit to one of our local fine art galleries. It’s a great juxtaposition to see an exhibition vs. individual works of art. But all of it gets your brain firing, sparks curiosity, provides a new experience, and gives you (literally) a mental health boost!” Kristin Armstrong, Executive Director, Saugatuck Center for the Arts

Autumn also brings a full calendar of creative experiences, including the Fall Gallery Stroll, making it an especially rewarding time to connect with the artists and organizations that help define the Art Coast.

“Take advantage of the events at Ox-Bow!!” Philip Palazzolo, Owner, Art Coast Properties

Annual autumn events for the Ox-Bow School of Art include their Fall Art on the Meadow Workshops, Fall Harvest Dinner, Bloody Brunch, and Cavern Tavern party.
