About this Sculpture

  • Artist: Johnny Blue
  • Medium: Steel
  • Size: 30"x 24" x 98"

The world of Johnny Blue, an artist from Fennville, MI is inventive, smart, whimsical and powerful. His imaginative work from various metals and stainless steel has achieved recognition in private and corporate collections around the world.

Sometimes delicate, other times massive and dynamic, Johnny’s creativity is seen in his indoor and outdoor sculptures. Many of his works involve scrap metal and found objects. These sculptures can be the most difficult as the forms dictate the sculptures. Johnny has an intent and direction with every sculpture created and uses only the metal that will successfully integrate into the work.

His refined stainless steel works involve a complicated form of welding where small pieces are individually welded together and then sanded and polished to create a modeled form.

Blue is known for the star sculptures, a series of shapes that cascade down or ascend up, depending on the eye movement of the viewer.

400 Culver St., Saugatuck, MI 49453

Walk around the sculpture

  • What is the main shape that connects the parts together?
  • How is this piece of metal different that the others?
  • The zigzag form that stands vertically is similar to a totem pole.

Look closely at the sculpture

  • Notice how the metal circles jut out from the center of the V form.
  • Each of the circles has a different face that gives them character and interest.
  • The base is also a number of circles stacked giving  the piece weight and balance.

As you step away from the sculpture

  • It is important to know the story of this sculpture.
  • The SCA  was originally the Lloyd J. Harriss pie factory. When the building was remodeled, some old metal pieces were saved. Johnny Blue used that metal to create this sculpture.
  • Do you see any pieces that might remind you of a pie factory?
